A poll released last week showed the two were in a statistical tie for the seat previously held by Republican Duncan Hunter. He announced in 2018 he would not seek re-election and is now running in the 50th Congressional District race against Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar. That same year, in what turned out to be the most competitive congressional race in the country, former Republican Congressman Darrell Issa was narrowly re-elected to a ninth term. In 2016, district voters favored Hillary Clinton over now-President Donald Trump by 7.5 points, a result that had a material down-ballot effect. The area also lost many of its inland Republican voters when the district was reshaped following the 2010 census. The 49th District - which stretches from northern La Jolla to Dana Point and includes Vista and Camp Pendleton - has transitioned from a solid Republican district to a Purple district in recent years, driven by demographic changes and a deep dislike of President Donald Trump. His critics, including Maryott, a certified financial planner, have cast the lawmaker as being too liberal for district voters. He also supported the Green New Deal and backed impeachment proceedings against Trump. A month after taking office, he took on local issues, creating a task force to devise potential solutions for waste storage at the San Onofre Generating Station. Levin has served on key congressional committees and been outspoken about veterans’ affairs and environmental issues such as climate change.
Pitney also said the incumbent has done a good job establishing himself in Congress since he took office in 2019. “This confirms that Levin is the strong favorite in this district,” Pitney said. Jack Pitney, a Claremont McKenna College political science professor, said the results were not a surprise, given that Levin has the advantage of an incumbent in a district that has been trending Democratic.
